Fountain Pen Basics for First-Time Buyers
Fast Pick Mart Editorial
July 29, 2026
A fountain pen is simply a refillable writing tool with a metal nib. For a first pen, a medium stainless steel nib from Pilot or a similar everyday model is forgiving and easy to maintain.
Filling Systems
Cartridge pens are simplest. Converters let you use bottled ink. Dip pens are for calligraphy practice, not commuting.
Care
Flush with lukewarm water when changing colors. Cap the pen when idle. Avoid leaving ink to dry in the feed for weeks.
Paper
Pair fountain pens with smoother, heavier stock. Cheap absorbent paper will feather. Rhodia and many Leuchtturm1917 notebooks are reliable starting points.
